When enjoying the outdoors on a bicycle, roller skates, in a wheelchair for the physically disabled or simply on foot, travelling over a safe route protected from automobile traffic is a desire shared by all of us when on holiday or during leisure time.

The local Greenways network created by the Saône-&-Loire Council offer users a smooth rolling surface and make use of the rights-of-way of former railway lines and towpaths. The department's "Blue Pathways" ("Voie Bleue") running along the Saône River has not, on some of the towpath sections, been surfaced with materials or in a way conducive to roller-skating.

A number of facilities and services are accessible all along the route: parking lots, water faucets, lavatories, picnic grounds, recreational area, shaded rest stops, benches, bicycle parking, bike and roller skate rentals, skate parks, bicycle racks and stands, plus other amenities as well...

And with space limiting the possibility of Greenways paths extending everywhere, the local Council has also undertaken a project to lay out "Cycling routes", a series of well-marked bicycle-friendly itineraries designed over lightly-travelled roads and feature a greater elevation difference than on the other paths.

Nearly 250 km of Cycling Routes and Greenways are available for use.

A total of 25 touring loops for the cyclist, mapped on small country highways with traffic levels of fewer than 1,000 vehicles/day, are all well-marked and associated with both the Greenways and Cycling Routes. They have been designed to allow exploring and relishing, over some 600 km of itineraries, the artistic and cultural life experienced here in Southern Burgundy.
